THE ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT for this book was prepared about forty
years ago, and the first edition, entitled Medical and Veterinary Entomology, appeared in 1915. The book was most generously received from
the beginning and has been widely and increasingly used in each succeeding edition. Jt took considerable perseverance to complete another
revision for a fourth edition. With the encouragement of long-time users
of the work and the assistance of colleagues, graduate students, and
others this has now been accomplished.
The science of medical entomology has been fully accepted as one
of the important fundamentals for complete knowledge and understanding of public health operations as well as for an understanding of
the health of domestic animals; it is essential to a complete understanding of the epidemiology of disease. Medical entomology is now taught
in the entomological curricula of most colleges and universities, as well
as in curricula of public health, preventive medicine, and tropical medicine.
