The enthusiastic reception of the prior edition of Essentials of Rubin’s Pathology motivated us to prepare a new fifth edition. The text is based on the larger fifth edition of Rubin’s Pathology and provides a summary of contemporary general and systemic pathology. We have omitted most of the discussions of normal anatomy, physiology and histology, as well as the descriptions of less frequently encountered diseases, when such do not teach important fundamental concepts. In addition, the clinical and experimental support for statements in the text have been shortened. Thus, our goal for Essentials of Rubin’s Pathology is to present the reader with all the key concepts of the evolution and expression of disease and to assign priorities based on the clinical importance and heuristic relevance of the individual disorders. In revising the manuscript we have updated and modified content that is important in achieving our goal.
